In light of how important radios are I finally invested in, what I hope to be, a quality handset. Since I can't afford a Kenwood, iCom or Yaesu I went with the Wouxun KG-UVD1 ($120) • Dual Band = UHF/VHF capable (i.e. FF was on UHF & The Horsemen were on VHF @ OP:LS) • Dual Frequency = you can be active on one channel while monitoring another. Any combo of UHF/UHF UHF/VHF or VHF/VHF. • Freq Coverage = most VHF and UHF including FRS, GMRS and Business FRS (i.e. Bus. FRS = the FF Motorolas) • 128 Memory slots for all those channels • Stopwatch • 1W/5W Output (i.e. THROUGH buildings) For those that don't need VHF capapbility the Wouxun KG-689 Plus might be for you and it saves you about $40 KG-UVD1 ($117): http://www.409shop.com/shop_displaynews.php?id=295KG-689 Plus ($79): http://www.409shop.com/409shop_product.php?id=101770Large (Tactical) PTT ($12): http://www.409shop.com/409shop_product.php?id=102829USB Programming Cable ($12): http://www.409shop.com/409shop_product.php?id=103760Now www.409shop.com just happens to be a place where I found the best prices and I like the fact that shipping is included in their pricing. I placed the order today 8/6/2009 and we'll see if HK Post does get it to me withn 7-14 days. [NOTE: last time I dealt with an HK shop it took 6 weeks to get my order] Full review on this radio upon arrival ! BOSS ... out !

However it will drain your batts faster. UHF is line-of-sight dependent so at 5W you might get a 3 mile range out of it. So if you're wondering all that 12 mile or 27 mile range BS you see on all the FRS/GMRS Packaging is referring to line-of-sight distances and 100% battery power.

The package arrived yesterday Aug 17th. I opened the package and turned the unit on and the battery comes with a full charge ! The handset feels solid and has a substantial weight. That's all I had time to do since I was on lunch break .... more to come. BOSS

Are these radios considered Amateur radios? If so, is there any licensing required to operate them?

Initial report: Delivery Time: It took a little over 6 weeks to arrive from 409 Radio Shop in Hong Kong but everything showed up A-OK Programming: You WILL NOT be able to program this thing with on its own keypad. Just spend the extra money for the programming cable and use the Excel style software to program your frequencies. This radio is capable of covering ALL FRS/GMRS freq's and commercial VHF. You can also use custom frequencies (i.e. a FilForce only frequency that no other teams could even access !) Field Use: Since I have only used this with others using FRS/GMRS I can only comment on that application. I played a small 15-on-15 game with this radio without a headset and it performed well. You do have to be careful NOT to hit the scan button or you will lose channels. I did use the dual channel feature and was able to monitor the Admin channel while Rx/Tx on our team channel, this is a VERY handy feature espcially for someone in a command position to be able to monitor 2 channels at once. Range in heavily wooded areas was about 1/2 - 3/4 mile with no clarity issues. NOTE I have also used this on open water as a VHF and had range up to about 5 miles on unobstructed open water ... so this radio does have power. I would highly recommend this as a Cheapsoft replica of a more expensive iCon, Kenwood or Yaesu comm for airsoft use. Next report will be with throat mic usage I am planning to locate my PTT on my right shoulder so that I can activate the radio with the buttstock of my M4

FRS will work off of a repeater. Pyramid makes a nice one. I have had several of them.
